For many light industrial automation applications, a lightweight robotic arm offers clear advantages: a smaller footprint, easier installation, and simpler integration into existing production environments.

 

With this in mind, Niryo developed NR2, its new 6-axis industrial robotic arm, now available.

 

With a 2 kg payload, a footprint of just 190 mm, and two reach options of 800 or 1,100 mm, NR2 is designed to efficiently automate handling applications involving lightweight parts.

 

An Industrial Robotic Arm Designed for Light Industrial Automation

 

Machine tending, component handling, quality inspection, packaging, and assembly: many industrial applications call first and foremost for a compact, properly sized robot.

 

NR2 delivers a 2 kg payload with a base footprint of just 190 mm in diameter. Its compact design makes it easier to install next to a machine, within an existing cell, or at a workstation where space is limited.

 

This compact footprint comes with ±0.1 mm pose repeatability according to ISO 9283 and a maximum TCP speed of 3 m/s.

The goal: deliver the performance required for light industrial automation in a compact form factor, without oversizing the robotic system.

 

800 or 1,100 mm: The Right Reach for the Application

 

Extended reach in a compact form factor

 

An application may involve lightweight parts while still requiring a large work envelope, for example, to reach inside a machine, cover multiple positions, or operate around existing equipment.

 

NR2 is therefore available in two configurations to match the robot’s reach to the application:

  • NR2M: 800 mm reach, 2 kg payload, and 17 kg robot weight;
  • NR2L: up to 1,100 mm reach, with a payload of up to 2 kg depending on reach, and a robot weight of 19 kg.

 

Both models maintain the same 190 mm base footprint.

 

This approach makes it possible to select the robot based on the work envelope the application actually requires, without automatically moving to a higher-payload robot.

 

NR2M combines a compact design with 800 mm of reach. NR2L extends the accessible work area up to 1,100 mm when the layout or process requires it.

Practical Industrial Automation Applications

 

The combination of a 2 kg payload, compact footprint, and extended reach makes NR2 suitable for a range of common automation applications.

 

For machine tending, the robot can handle lightweight parts while reaching inside production equipment. For quality inspection, it can move a part or sensor between multiple inspection points.

 

NR2 can also perform repetitive packaging, sorting, material handling, and light assembly operations.

 

In each case, the principle remains the same: match the robot’s capabilities to the actual requirements of the application rather than oversizing the automation system.

 

Full Control of the Robot Technology, from Hardware to Software

 

The performance of an industrial robot depends on more than the mechanical arm itself. It comes from the interaction between its actuators, controller, interfaces, software, and surrounding equipment.

 

That is why Niryo developed NR2 as part of Nate, its robotics ecosystem, with control over the core technology building blocks, from hardware to software.

 

The platform brings together NA Series actuators, NR Series robotic arms, NPG Series grippers, the NC1000 controller, and NiryoStudio for Nate.

 

This approach allows these components to be engineered as one coherent system rather than as a collection of independent building blocks.

 

The NC1000 controller provides Ethernet and USB connectivity, industrial I/O, as well as Modbus TCP and EtherNet/IP protocols. NR2 also features an ISO 9409-1 tool interface, I/O, and a communication port for standard off-the-shelf tools. 

 

The robot is CE certified. Its technical datasheet references the ISO 10218-1 safety standard and an IP54 protection rating for the robotic arm.

 

NiryoStudio for Nate: Making Robot Programming Easier

 

A robot can deliver strong performance and still be difficult to deploy if programming requires too much time or highly specialized expertise.

 

This is an area Niryo has focused on from the very beginning.

 

Our experience in education has taught us one essential lesson: advanced technologies can still be easy to learn and use.

 

This philosophy is now embedded in NiryoStudio for Nate, the software environment used to configure and program NR2.

 

NiryoStudio provides both visual programming and Python programming, project-based application organization, and connectivity with sensors and controllers.

 

The goal is not to simplify industrial robotics at the expense of its capabilities. It is to remove unnecessary complexity, allowing integrators, automation engineers, and technical teams to focus on the application they need to automate.

 

This is also a continuation of Niryo’s DNA: making advanced robotics technologies easier to understand, program, and operate.

 

NR2 is now available

 

With NR2, Niryo offers an industrial robotic arm designed for light industrial automation, with two configurations to address different installation requirements: 800 mm reach with NR2M and up to 1,100 mm with NR2L.

 

NR2 reflects a core belief: effective automation does not necessarily mean choosing the biggest or most powerful robot. It means selecting an architecture that fits the task, the available space, and the process.

 

NR2M and NR2L are now available for purchase.
